Broken Horse Necklace
Owyhee Picture jasper
Sterling silver pendent - reclaimed
18" sturdy sterling silver chain that can be adjusted to wear shorter
The name of this piece comes from the book Broken Horses that Brandi Carlile wrote. Usually the term "broken" horse means that the horse has been broken from her own instincts and is now "tame." Well, as Brandi sees it, broken horses is thought of as the horses that were accessible to her. Her family could not afford horses that were easy to ride so they were given horses that were injured in some way - physically and mentally. She felt a connection to those horses and they became her best friends. I love this metaphor to how her art was in part created by the brokenness of these animals as well to the feeling of not belonging as a gay woman in the music industry. So, here ya go... a broken horse living wildly free on the plains. I just love this piece and a lot of my own feelings of being broken as a child and the struggles I felt growing up poor represent the horse and the creation of this piece as a whole. It's a special one.
Made with love - one of a kind, twisted, bent, set, sawn, etched, fired by my own two hands.
Note to buyer: The reclaiming process is a bit of a long one. Most of the sterling silver I buy is from well used jewelry that isn't being worn anymore or has been broken. I also buy used sterling silverware. I melt it all down and roll it into sheet and wire. This means that I don't have to buy freshly mined silver that is much easier to work with. Reclaimed pieces cost more because of this extra process. In the end, reclaiming metal for my wares is gratifying and worth it to me. I hope you feel the same. With love.
