This necklace was inspired by a day I had on the river after Hurricane Helene devastated parts of the Southeast United States.
After the storm and all the devastation I saw (and am still seeing), I didn’t know how to go back to work and make things that I felt like would be good enough. It was through heartache, duty to fellow man and maybe even a little faith that I found myself eager for some creative reprieve. I took a walk to the river one day and felt the Osprey calling me. The Trout darted from under one big rock to the next, momentarily revealing its silvery side. Among the aftermath of a flood, the disturbed sediment from the Hellbender took shape in my chest and the hollowed crayfish claw gave details of its last meal. As the sun started to subside, I noticed the galax move, and upon closer inspection, the Snake slithered from whence she came. I knew then it was time to get to work.
Every bit of this necklace is dear to me. If you are reading this, I know it reminds you of home.
Note to buyer: The reclaiming process is a bit of a long one. Most of the sterling silver I buy is from well used jewelry that isn't being worn anymore or has been broken. I also buy used sterling silverware. I melt it all down and roll it into sheet and wire. This means that I don't have to buy freshly mined silver that is much easier to work with. Reclaimed pieces cost more because of this extra process. In the end, reclaiming metal for my wares is gratifying and worth it to me. I hope you feel the same. With love.
